Here’s a name every Christ follower today should know: Joyce Lin. This 40-year-old American missionary pilot flew medicine, Bibles, and supplies to remote Indonesian villages for Mission Aviation Fellowship. Last Tuesday, while flying COVID-19 tests to a community in need, Lin’s plane suddenly went down, claiming her life.
The region where she was flying is notoriously difficult to navigate. But she did it anyway because, as her colleagues attested, she took joy in serving the Lord by serving others.
At the heart of Jesus’ commands about loving and serving others is this idea that every person is valuable in the eyes of God. So we should value their lives just as we value our own. Joyce Lin embodied that command, and her obedience is worthy of our imitation. Just like the thousands of examples across the Church, around the world, right now, of people living—maybe even dying—in the name of Jesus and serving others.
